A NEW DAY DAWNING FOR PRIMAL BODY, PRIMAL MIND!

This blog post represents an announcement I am quite excited about sharing with all of you.  Rather than side step this I’ll just come out with it:

Primal Body-Primal Mind has been picked up by a large enthusiastic publisher and is slated to be re-released in no small fashion sometime this summer!!

I was approached some time ago by Inner Traditions – Bear & Company with a wonderful offer to take my existing book and re-release it in a manner that will allow it to reach a far greater global audience.  The entire staff at Inner Traditions has been enormously positive, helpful, enthusiastic and supportive to me in the process of all this and I think you will all be more than pleased with the results.

So, you ask, is it the same book?  How will it be different?

Keep in mind that this is essentially the same book you have all come to know and love, but with some wonderful new and updated information, better referencing, vastly superior editing, a new foreword by Dr. Mark Steinberg plus an additional new wonderful foreword written by Brent Pottenger (descendant of Dr. Francis Pottenger and head of the newly established Ancestral Health Society), a new cover and new photo of me, together with some notable endorsements.  I’ve had an opportunity over the last number of months to review many of your comments about my book and make some positive changes to the material and make the manner in which it is presented significantly better.

To call this version “new and improved” is truly an understatement.

I have been nothing short of impressed with the publisher, the book’s progress and the developing plans for reaching a much wider audience.  Be prepared for big things.  This is going to be GREAT!

My book, under the new title of “Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet For Total Health and a Longer Life” is already available on Amazon.com for pre-order.  The existing version will be taken out of print as of March 1st, 2011. Hopefully the lag time won’t be more than 3 or 4 months.  The publisher has promised to have the new release on the book shelves no later than August 1st (I will be presenting at the Ancestral Health Symposium at UCLA August 7th).  Hopefully the new release will come much sooner.

For those of you that love the original version, you may want to consider giving that copy to a relative or friend and picking up the new and improved version for a renewed and updated perspective on the material.  There will certainly be something new there for those already familiar with Primal Body-Primal Mind and for the as yet uninitiated this new version will be a better-than-ever introduction to those seeking to improve their total health!

About Primal Body, Primal Mind

Combining your body’s Paleolithic needs with modern nutritional and medical research for complete mind-body wellness

• Provides sustainable diet strategies to curb sugar cravings, promote fat burning and weight loss, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep and moods, increase energy and immunity, and enhance memory and brain function

• Shows how our modern diet leads to weight gain and “diseases of civilization”–such as cancer, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and ADD

• Explains how diet affects the brain, hormone balance, and the aging process and the crucial role of vitamin D in cancer and disease prevention

Examining the healthy lives of our pre-agricultural Paleolithic ancestors and the marked decline in stature, bone density, and dental health and the increase in birth defects, malnutrition, and disease following the implementation of the agricultural lifestyle, Nora Gedgaudas shows how our modern grain- and carbohydrate-heavy low-fat diets are a far cry from the high-fat, moderate-protein hunter-gatherer diets we are genetically programmed for, leading not only to lifelong weight gain but also to cravings, mood disorders, cognitive problems, and “diseases of civilization”–such as cancer, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance), heart disease, and mental illness.

Applying modern discoveries to the basic hunter-gatherer diet, she culls from vast research in evolutionary physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, nutrition, and chronic and degenerative disease to unveil a holistic lifestyle for true mind-body health and longevity. Revealing the primal origins and physiological basis for a high-fat, moderate-protein, starch-free diet and the importance of adequate omega-3 intake–critical to our brain and nervous system but sorely lacking in most people’s diets–she explains the nutritional problems of grains, gluten, soy, dairy, and starchy vegetables; which natural fats promote health and which (such as canola oil) harm it; the crucial role of vitamin D in cancer and disease prevention; the importance of saturated fat and cholesterol; and how diet affects mental health, memory, cognitive function, hormonal balance, and cellular aging. With step-by-step guidelines, recipes, and meal recommendations, this book offers sustainable strategies for a primally based, yet modern approach to diet and exercise to reduce stress and anxiety, lose weight, improve sleep and mood, increase energy and immunity, enhance brain function, save money on groceries, and live longer and happier.

I just finished reading “The Primal Blueprint” by Mark Sisson. I’ll definitely be looking into “Primal Body, Primal Mind”. I started the primal diet a couple of months back after my girlfriend convinced me that it would help my bipolar symptoms. Wow, was she right! I’m a believer in the primal way of life. It’s not a diet or a passing fad–it’s a life-change that makes so much sense for me. Along the path of learning about the primal way, I learned that depression is an inflammatory disorder. What causes inflammation in our bodies? Carbohydrates, of course! I was poisoning myself with every piece of bread or bowl of cereal; it made no difference that they were whole grains. Eating right isn’t the only change I made. Routine exercise, meditation and regular sleep patterns have become the norm making insomnia, fatigue and stress a thing of the past. This book really does offer the tools one needs to change your life! I highly recommend it!

My publisher (Inner Traditions) told me that it will be in an ebook format (Kindle) soon. (I don’t have the exact date yet) I’ll keep everybody posted on my Facebook fan page and newsletters.

    Thanks!

In your book’s first edition, there are many recommendations for supplements. Bodies being the complex things they are, it’s hard to tell which would be the most helpful (or even helpful at all). What I’d really love to see is some guidelines on the order to try various supplements, how long to give them to determine if there’s some benefit being received, and/or a better way to determine which ones are really warranted (it gets expensive fast!).

Of course this varies from person to person. And, given how long you’ve been in practice, I would be quite surprised to hear you haven’t noticed any patterns that would provide a bit of guidance, or some general rules of thumb.

I’ll check out the new version to see if this has been addressed, or maybe you would blog about it sometime. I bet lots of people would like this kind of information.

Nora, I’ m wondering about the fat content of this diet for my husband. He is a genetic hyper-absorber with moderate CAD. He is of Indian descent. He was told that this genetic marker is characteristic of over 70% of Asians. He is very slender with low body fat. His doctor told him to cut way back on fats and oils, especially nut and seed oils. Could you let us know how we could adapt a primal diet for him? (This type of diet works very well for me.)

    Hello Nora,

I am on my second reading of your 2009 edition (a library copy). Before I spring for the 2011 edition, I thought I’d ask if a new edition is in the works. The book is very valuable as it is, but an update would be wonderful.

    Please let me know,

The 2011 version is infinitely superior to the 2009 edition. I have no plans to update Primal Body, Primal Mind further, as I mostly plan to create all new material. But I promise you that the 2011 version is well worth it. More information, better information, superior editing/layout and overall, a better read. I doubt you’d regret it.
