It’s about time someone talked about this.

Our medical doctors (at least most of them) certainly won’t. All they ever do is throw pills at it — pills that make the pharma companies a ton of money but never truly solve the real problem.

These days, more and more people are actively seeking natural solutions for digestive problems, foggy brain, insomnia, depression, and weight gain — health challenges that their doctors typically don’t understand — than ever before.

But what about sexual health?

Can sex-related health challenges be solved through natural means?

For women — issues like PMS, frequent UTIs, yeast infections, an inability to reach climax, or even a non-existent libido that’s more than likely causing relationship problems.

For men — low testosterone, high estrogen, E.D., a dwindling sex drive, or just not feeling like the man you once were.

Absolutely!

And that’s why my friend Sean Croxton put together the upcoming SexyBack Summit to show you EXACTLY how to get your sexy back…naturally.

Last year Sean hosted a pair of the internet’s most attended FREE online events, the Paleo Summit and Real Food Summit.

He is also the host of The Underground Wellness Show podcast and YouTube channel, where he interviews the top names in real nutrition, fitness, and health. His upcoming weeklong SexyBack event gets underway next Sunday, May 19th.

Seriously, you have to take a look at this lineup of speakers. It’s loaded with BIG names like Dr. Sara Gottfried, Dr. Jen Landa, Dave Asprey, Elliott Hulse, Alisa Vitti, Stefani Ruper, and more — 18 more, to be exact.

Plus, it’s totally FREE for you to attend!

To get you ready for the summit, Sean recorded a series of video interviews with his sexpert presenters. He’s calling them The SexyBack Sessions.

In session one, Sean has something for everyone. In fact, he filmed two versions of today’s Top 5 Ways to Supercharge Your Sex Drive episode — one for men and one for women.

Ladies first! Here’s what the you’ll learn…

* The juicy fruit that scientists are calling “nature’s little blue pill”. You’ll be shocked!
* The exercise proven by science to increase your sexual desire by 65%.
* The little-known libido point that can increase your libido in 60 seconds or less!

And for the guys…

* The food that sent Rocky Balboa’s testosterone through the roof!
* A handful of “girly” things that will make you more manly. Sounds backwards, huh?
* 3 supplements that help get the blood flowing…down there…if ya know what I mean.

The SexyBack Sessions video is 100% FREE, so go now and check it out

Jonathan Bailor, author of the soon-to-be-released book: The Calorie Myth (Harper Collins 2014) is launching what he calls “an angel funded non-profit ancestral nutrition education organization called Slim is Simple.”

Jonathan tells me that Slim Is Simple (SIS) will provide compelling multimedia resources—free of charge—that the educational and health communities can leverage to share the simple, fun, and proven ancestral nutrition science necessary to stem the obesity, diabetes, and heart disease epidemics.  He’s working to get this “curriculum” into schools, churches, etc.

He also has a podcast called, appropriately: “Jonathan Bailor’s Smarter Science of Slim”.  Jonathan asked to interview me on his podcast recently and we simply had a great time on the show.  Jonathan was a wonderful host and more than generous with his accolades of my work.  I sincerely appreciated his kindness, as well as his obvious passion for making a difference in the mainstream with a message both he and I seem to share.

After the podcast’s release, Jonathan sent me the following gift:

I hope all of you enjoy listening to the show we did as much as I enjoyed the interview.  We’ll be hearing a lot more about this guy!

Let’s face it. You’ve gotta love the message:

You really should watch Jonathan’s first full-length animated ancestral educational piece. It’s awesome!

Reclaim Your Primal Birthright…take the Primal Body Primal Mind 30-Day Challenge and Greet 2013 with A Healthier YOU!

So you’ve outlived the end of that Mayan calendar and are ready to greet the new cycle and the New Year with a whole new lease on life!  RIGHT?

Before introducing the challenge, I’d like to remind you to please consult with your natural healthcare provider before getting started with this challenge if you have severe blood sugar issues, clinical hypoglycemia, alcoholism, or similar health issues. There may be certain accommodations or changes you need to make to compensate for those.  The same applies if you have any other series health issue, gallbladder attacks, kidney stones, or serious pain in your right upper ribcage area (this may indicate gallbladder problems and should be addressed by a qualified healthcare provider). This may also not be an appropriate challenge for those who are seriously ill or who are pregnant or nursing, as making sudden changes in your diet may not be advisable. Please consult with your doctor or natural healthcare provider to be sure! I don’t recommend that children or teens necessarily restrict protein or calories, although I still think restriction of carbohydrates of sugar and starch is highly desirable.

I’d also like to encourage anyone reading this who has not read my book, Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet for Total Health and A Longer Life to do so.  Believe me when I say I’m not just trying to sell books when I say this.  Despite what you might think you need more than just being told “what to do” in order to be successful.  You also need to really understand the “why’s” to really get it in your bones so that you can better sustain the course over the long haul.  Otherwise, sooner or later temptation, peer pressure and the familiarity of old habits will call to you from the depths of your muddled psyche and eventually override your blind resolve.  Trust me on this.

Okay, all that being said, the challenge consists of 5 things to avoid, and 5 things to do every day for the next 30 days. We’ll start with the no-no’s:

AVOID THESE 5 THINGS FOR 30 DAYS:

1.  Sugars

2.  Starches

3.  Gluten

4.  Processed Foods

5.  Bad Fats

1.    Do Not Eat Sugars

This includes obvious things like sugary desserts and processed snacks (along with juices, sports drinks and sodas), but also most fruit.  A handful of berries might be okay but ideally, (and especially if you have any issues with blood sugar or weight or diabetes) I would even get rid of the fruit at least temporarily.

2.    Do Not Eat Starch

Starch includes grains of all kinds (even the gluten-free variety or so called “safe starch”), rice, pasta, potatoes, breads, cereals, and beans/legumes). This also includes the other starchy root vegetables.

3.    Do Not Eat Gluten

No gluten. That’s 100%…not “99%”. To find the hidden sources of gluten (because it’s hidden in so many processed foods and so many other things) you may need to go online and you can also look up more details about this in my book. My book also goes into considerable detail as to why this may be one of the single most positive and critically important things you can possibly do for your health, and why it can really help you dodge some major bullets.

4.    Do Not Eat Processed Foods

The exception to this is things such as certain quality condiments including Coconut Aminos® (instead of tamari or soy sauce) or, say, simple, high quality prepared mustards which have only 4 or 5 ingredients that you can actually pronounce. They should also preferably be gluten free. Things like quality organic Balsamic vinegar are fine. Stay away from getting your meals from a cardboard box and from the frozen dinner section in the grocery store. Focus instead on real, whole food.

5.    Do Not Use Hydrogenated/Partially Hydrogenated or Overly Processed Vegetable Oils or Rancid Fats

Remember that ALL commercial canola and soybean oils (apart from being genetically modified, which is bad enough) are partially hydrogenated as part of their deodorization process.  Be especially leery of concoctions in so-called natural food deli’s, which are inexplicably rife with canola oil.  ALWAYS read ingredient labels and don’t just rely on the “trans-fat free” label.  They are often misleading.  Also, avoid most processed vegetable oils.  Just stick with the ones I’ve mentioned above.  Overly processed vegetable oils include things like safflower, sunflower, corn oils, Crisco, Wesson and most other seed blend oils.  Grape seed oil is typically hexane (a toxic compound) extracted and has no real health benefits.  Commercial flax and hemp oils are also commonly rancid by the time you open them and might best be avoided (and should never, under any circumstance be cooked with).  Avoid deep fat frying or cooking in any fat or oil that has been over-heated. Try to always stick with medium heat when cooking at most.

DO
THESE 5 THINGS FOR 30 DAYS:

1.  Moderate amounts of protein

2.  High-fiber vegetables & greens

3.  Good Fats

4.  100% pastured Meat

5.  Water

1.    Moderate Your Protein Intake

In other words, I know there are people that promote Paleolithic diets that say, “Just eat all the meat you want.” That’s not really where I come from. Again, I go into detail in my book as to why. A lot of my recommendations are geared toward optimizing Paleo principles and based on some very current research in human longevity. What I mean by moderating your protein intake is that you should restrict yourself to roughly 6 or 7 ounces of protein per day, divided into small amounts at each meal (say, 2-3 oz). For instance, you could have a mixed vegetable salad with a few slices of a beautiful steak on it. Another option could be a small roasted chicken thigh with a big pile of steaming spinach with olive oil, butter, or duck fat.  Or you could have broccoli, or asparagus, or whatever wonderful, fibrous vegetables you have available instead. See my book for more information about creating more individually customized calculations.

2.    Eat A Big Variety of Fibrous, Organic Vegetables and Greens

These vegetables and greens can be raw, lightly cooked, or cultured (a wonderful way of doing it). You could also, if you like, juice your fibrous/green vegetables (use lemon/ginger if you want for added flavor and/or a tiny bit of minimally processed stevia for sweetness). That’s an obviously marvelous thing to do, too for getting really concentrated phyto-nutrients and antioxidants. I think that plant foods, because of their antioxidant content and because of the kind of toxic environment that we’re all exposed to nowadays are probably more important to us now than they ever used to be in our evolutionary history.  Always be sure to avoid all GMO sources of any food.

If you experience an increase in gas or discomfort then you may either juice these or you may want to cook them more fully to break down bacterially enhancing (from SIBO) fiber.

3.    Eat Fat

Eat as much fat as you need or want along the way in order to satisfy your appetite. Do not be afraid of natural dietary fat. Whether it’s animal fat, or fat from foods like avocados, or olives, as well as olive, avocado or macadamia nut oil—a good healthy variety of natural fats is the important thing.  Heavy cream, butter or ghee, is fine—as long as you do not have a dairy sensitivity (confirm with Cyrex Array 4 testing). If you want to cook in tallow or a nice healthy organic non-hydrogenated, pastured lard, that’s great, too. Coconut oil and full fat coconut milk/coconut cream are wonderful as well.

Try to find a local or good online source of quality duck (or goose) fat if you can possibly swing it financially (or at least as an occasional treat).  It may be the single most delicious and flavorful fat there is for cooking or sautéing there is.  I now personally use this wherever I can instead of either butter or ghee (and I ain’t looking back).

Most importantly, don’t let the old, outdated mainstream taboos allow you to be afraid of fat. What you’re probably going to find is that you don’t end up having to eat a lot of it because fat is very satiating (in other words, it really satisfies your appetite). Be sure to eat as much as you need or want to. Think of fat (as Dr. Ron Rosedale likes to say) like a free fuel—there are worse consequences to not eating enough fat than eating more.  Make sure that you’re getting fat from a wide variety of sources. Be sure to include some of the essential fats like Omega 3’s from pastured eggs, wild game and grass fed meats. If you also want to take supplemental contaminant-free fish oil or Antarctic krill oil, that’s wonderful too.

4.    Eat Exclusively Organic, Pasture-Fed Meat

Make sure all of your protein comes from naturally fed (in other words grass fed) sources. Eat wild game or purely pasture fed and finished meats as much as possible. Pastured poultry of all kinds and pastured eggs are great too (that is, if you tolerate eggs).  Avoid GMO corn and soy fed meats at all costs.

5.    Hydrate

Just make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day. Water is the one fluid that we were actually designed to consume. It is the second most important thing that we put into our bodies, next to oxygen. Make sure that you get one or two liters of purified water per day at minimum.  If you are especially physically active, then drink more!

REMEMBER THIS:

By taking part in this challenge for just 30 days, you can begin to see a real difference in your body, and in the way that you feel. This challenge was designed to kick-start your journey down the Primal Body, Primal Mind path (or reboot you, if you’ve fallen off the Primal wagon) so that you can begin to see and feel a real difference in your body and mindset.

You’ll be well on your way to building good eating habits for a healthier you in 2013!

Season’s Greetings Everyone!

I’ve received a few e-mails from some of you asking about various holiday ideas and thought I’d just put a few things together for your consideration this holiday season.  Each of these are items I have used and personally recommend as the best of their kind.   I’ll be adding more of these goodies to my resources page so keep checking back!

Here are a few of my favorite health-related tools:

Precision Xtra Blood Glucose & Ketone Monitoring System

The Precision Xtra Blood Glucose & Ketone Monitoring System was designed for easy testing. Intuitive setup and simple icon-driven menus help simplify blood glucose monitoring. In addition, the Precision Xtra system tests both blood sugar and blood ketone all with the same meter — using the Precision Xtra blood glucose test strips and Precision Xtra blood ketone test strips.

Make sure to order the test strips:

Brain Builder

Advanced Brain Technologies (ABT) is responsible for numerous innovative and respected brain enhancing programs.  The EEG Institute unhesitatingly recommends their programs and the research/cutting edge science-based integrity of ABT is second to none.  The Listening Program® is also a profoundly transformative program for anyone that uses it, though it’s use is best directed by a trained specialist for optimal results.  The BrainBuilder® is an exhaustively researched, newly updated and very well conceived program that anyone can own and use daily to improve and monitor their own cognitive performance on multiple levels.  There’s a lot of this sort of thing out there in the marketplace nowadays (a lot of copycats), but ABT consistently shines with integrity as a uniquely innovative class act, head and shoulders above the rest in the proven enhancement of brain performance at any level and any age.  Great for kids, adults and anyone looking to stave off or even reverse cognitive decline that sometimes comes with aging and/or neurodegenerative processes.  Plus, it’s fun and engaging to-boot!

Xtrema 10” Ceramic Skillet

I am actually quite excited about the Xtrema line of ceramic cookware.  This is the first cookware I have found that is 100% non-reactive with food in any way AND has excellent non-stick characteristics, as well.  I have a larger version of this skillet I use for virtually all my stove sauteing and skillet dishes.  This cookware is beautiful to look at, too.  I’ve been quite impressed with its performance.

Xtrema 2 1/2 qt. Ceramic Saucepot

This Xtrema ceramic Saucepot is, as far as I’m concerned THE ultimate soup and chili pot.  It’s just the right size and utterly versatile.  You can even bake things with it in the oven.  It looks gorgeous and performs amazingly well.  It is the only soup, stew and chili pot you will ever need.

Digital Scale

For those just getting started with my Primal recommendations, this scale can totally take the guesswork out of your protein measuring.  It readily measures in either grams or ounces (your choice at the touch of a button).  It’s really intuitive to use an easy to clean.  I’ve been very happy with mine!

Excalibur 3900 Deluxe Series 9 Tray Food Dehydrator

For soaking and drying those nuts, making mouth watering nut crackers or the ultimate in nutritionally viable kale chips, beef or salmon jerky or whatever else tickles your fancy no one has ever beat the Excalibur food dehydrator for its excellent quality and capacity.  It’s an outstanding product and an indispensable tool in the kitchen.

Natural Fermenation Crocks and SuppliesCultures for Health

The folks at Cultures for Health know culturing anything like no one knows culturing.  Their live cultures are truly second to none.  When it comes to culturing your own veggies, this gorgeous fermentation crock truly gets the job done without all the mess, fuss and bother of a conventional crock (trust me, I’ve learned the hard way).  It’s beautiful, utilitarian and will make you gallons of probiotic, nutrient and enzyme-packed healthy cultured vegetables for years to come–all while looking simply beautiful on your counter-top.

David Delight Pro

Mind Alive Brain Tool

For those of you with a brain–especially a brain “in need” or a brain-enhancing interest, few “mind tools” can match up with the genius and second-to-none (seriously) quality behind Dave Siever’s widely respected Mind Alive products.  I received my introduction to neurotechnology using Dave Siever’s former “D.A.V.I.D. Paradise” Audio-Visual Entrainment (AVE) device and over the years he has continued to develop this technology through painstaking and passionate research simply unmatched by any other competitor in the field.  Today the Paradise has been replaced by the new and improved D.A.V.I.D. (digital audio-visual entrainment device) Delight and Delight-Pro.  I’ve tried every mind tool there is and there are few I can recommend without reservation.  Mind Alive mind tools can literally change your life and can greatly enhance any other method of cognitive and/or brain enhancement you may be using.  This tool is a superior relaxation device and can literally put your brain in a meditative state in merely five minutes that most Zen monks spend 18 years or more learning to cultivate.  Or maybe need to feel awake and alert for that meeting or exam?  There’s a brain setting for that, too.  Want to align your mind with the earth’s Schumann resonance (the frequency of the earth’s inner ionosphere, found in nearly all living things)?  There’s a setting for that, too.  Trouble sleeping?  Try any one of several well-designed programs at the push of a button designed to help you fall asleep quickly and restfully.  This incredible, versatile, portable and simple to use  tool is a must for any student or anyone, for that matter seeking a neuro-cognitive edge and neurocognitive excellence.  Many neurofeedback clients have used Mind Alive mind tools as a superb adjunct to their brain training protocols. I have said many times that I would not be involved in the field of brain training as I am today were it not for David Siever and his effective, well-researched and powerful mind-enhancing technology.  AVE technology opened my mind to the possibilities of the broader field of neurotechnology and eventually the neurofeedback work I do now.  Although the modalities (between AVE and neurofeedback) differ quite a bit, I still own and use Mind Alive tools and hold them very close to my heart.  They are both powerful and user-friendly–And simply NO ONE can match Mind Alive’s customer support and satisfaction.  I mean it.  If you mention my name when ordering, you’ll receive a 5% discount!   www.mindalive.com

Sunlighten Saunas

Give the gift of health and wellness!

Infrared Saunas

Although at first glance, on the surface of things, an actual sauna might seem like an extravagant thing to own or purchase, but I have found that the infrared Sunlighten Saunas (formerly “Sunlight Saunas”, as mentioned in my book, Primal Body, Primal Mind) with their unique Solocarbon® Full Spectrum technology have a detoxification potential that is truly second to none.  I know of no single tool that can be a more effective support in the quest for regular, simple and effective detoxification.  I own one of these and would never be without it.  On a cold winter morning nothing will warm you more deeply and on a cold winter night nothing will prepare you for a more deep and restful sleep.  Even so, full spectrum infrared saunas run on average 60 degrees cooler than conventional saunas yet penetrate their heat more deeply, activating your detoxification potential on a deep, much more powerful cellular level unique to infrared technology.  Also, unlike conventional saunas infrared heat can actually relax blood vessels, helping reduce high blood pressure and not adding to it as conventional saunas can.  Many additionally find Sunlighten saunas effective for pain control of many types, including fibromyalgia-related symptoms.  Many find it additionally helpful in weight loss — by more effectively releasing toxins from adipose tissue. The body is then freer and less reluctant to mobilize free fatty acids without the risk of releasing toxic compounds back into your system–one common source of weight-loss resistance. These guys have done their research and have created a superb quality EMF-safe product (and series of products) that are uniquely superior in their capacity to effectively and safely detoxify the human body (bypassing the risks associated with things like chelation therapy) and can be used safely by anyone of any age, every single day.  I know many parents of autistic children happily and gratefully using infrared sauna technology with their children daily at home.  In a world where detoxification is a day-to-day challenge the use of infrared sauna technology simply can’t be beat.  I also own a simple infrared Solopad® which can be used alone (on your bed or on any massage table) to more deeply relax stiff, tired muscles and even offer that extra deep-penetrating support and comfort when you might be feeling that seasonal sniffle coming on.  Many will also be interested in the unique near infrared feature on some models that can help powerfully rejuvenate your skin.  No other manufacturer offers this option.  Like I said, these guys have really done their homework and support their technology with viable, independent research, as well as excellent customer support.

Give the gift of health and vitality with a Sunlighten™ infrared sauna.  With clinically-backed Solocarbon® heaters, Sunlighten™ saunas aid in detoxification, blood pressure reduction, weight loss, pain relief and skin purification.  Their most recent innovation, the mPulse sauna, is the worlds’ first and only full spectrum smart sauna – unlocking the widest range of health benefits.  Customizable heaters and 6 preset health programs make it easy to target individual wellness goals.

As a special offer, Sunlighten has agreed to provide you with free shipping and a gift with purchase when you mention my name.  If you order now, you can receive your Sunlighten sauna before we officially welcome the new year!  Make it your healthiest yet!

…and of course my book is a great gift for anyone on your list!

Nora and Louise

A couple of weekends ago I had the unique and rather extraordinary pleasure of spending a whole weekend of quality personal time with author, publishing mogul and the Grand Dame of the Self-Help Movement herself, Louise Hay at both of her residences in and near San Diego.

I KNOW….OMG!

We share a mutual friend and it was this, along with my book (which she totally loves) that brought us together.  We had a wonderful time and found a kindred spirit in one-another in our shared lifelong passion for inspiring the self-empowerment of others.  We also had a LOT of laughs (this woman is filled with a sense of humor and zest for life that puts many of those a fraction of her age to shame).

I had read her ground-breaking book “You Can Heal Your Life” many, many years ago, not long after it was first published.  Since its publication in 1984 her book has sold in excess of 50 million copies.  Unbelievable.  In many ways this was the book that actually launched the entire Self-Help Movement and brought into focus the power we all possess to create our own realities.  Hay House, her publishing company has since grown into a self-help empire of sorts.  She has truly done it all, and through it she has unwaveringly walked her talk.

It was the work she did with gay men dying from AIDS in the 1980’s that won over my deep abiding respect for Louise and her brand of self-healing.  –At a time when these terrified, suffering, grieving and broken spirited young men were being ostracized and vilified by society, our government and even their own families Louise Hay embraced them and gave them a safe haven of positive support and love.  Louise tells me that many of these men are still alive today and thank her in the streets wherever she goes.  One is tempted to call what she did at the time courageous (after all, AIDS was seen as a frighteningly lethal and mysteriously contagious plague that no one understood)—but in my mind her reaching out to them was simply an outgrowth of Louise’s own inherent love and compassion.  There is no room for fear in Love.  As Louise herself said to me “Courage had nothing to do with it because I was never afraid.”  I learned everything I ever needed to know about Louise from this.

Many do not realize how passionate she is about health and quality nutrition or that she healed herself (away from any conventional therapy) after her own Cancer diagnosis many years ago.  This stuff matters to her.  Louise Hay has read many, MANY books about health and nutrition over the years.  For some time now she has been a follower of the work of Weston Price, and she embraces a sugar free/grain free lifestyle.  She was already doing most of what my book suggests before even reading it. Nonetheless, my book helped put a lot of things together for her and it really resonated with a great deal of truth. In an e-mail to me she wrote (and consented to my sharing):

I really love this book. It covers everything. I have already bought 3 copies to give to worthy friends.

Many blessings,

~Louise Hay

As I was leaving her home Louise held my hand, looked me in the eye and wanted me to know that she genuinely adored me and also that she deeply respects my work.

DITTO, Louise.  Wow.  Ditto.

I feel a deep sense of honor and privilege in now counting this remarkable and legendary woman as my heartfelt friend.

I’m still pinching myself a little bit.

Anyone who has not seen her most recent documentary, “You Can Heal Your Life” needs to run (not walk) to view this incredible treasure.  It tells her life story and is also filled with engaging interviews of some of Hay House’s most well-known authors and speakers.  It’s widely available on DVD.  The expanded version is especially wonderful.  Its musical score is gorgeous.

After finally arriving home to Portland, Louise sent me an e-mail and wanted to offer me her “official endorsement” of my book.

Here it is:

“Primal Body, Primal Mind is the best nutritional book I have ever read.  A gold mine of great information.”

~Louise Hay

How cool is that?  ;-)

Black balloons….colorful slogans like “over the hill and picking up speed”…membership applications from AARP arriving in the mail, noticing that you are suddenly checking the “50 and over” category on various applications and surveys…

Ah….to be 50.

On Friday, June 10th I will be celebrating that very landmark, while feeling better and healthier than I did when I was half this age…and certainly much happier.  I may be “half a century old” but I’m ANYTHING BUT slowing down.  Things are picking up speed alright—not on the downhill slope, but on the fast track.  More than ever it’s “life in the fast lane”, it seems.  I’m livin’ la vida loca…not to mention livin’ la vida low-carb (sorry, Jimmy….couldn’t resist using that one).  It’s all good.  I certainly can’t complain (though I still like to once in a while).  :)

One rather wonderful early 50th birthday gift, of course, is the rather timely release of the substantially improved new edition of my book Primal Body, Primal Mind with the new subtitle: Beyond the Paleo Diet For Total Health and A Longer Life.  The first copies just arrived at my office yesterday afternoon, at which time a person sitting in my waiting room—who already had my dog-eared first edition in-hand– said: “I’ll take two copies.”

–Actually, a pretty smart move.

It’s been a little over two years since I stubbornly self-published my first edition—at first not wanting any outside publisher take control and chop my “baby” up into little pieces, however they saw fit, while changing its name and giving it some lame cover I was going to hate–  No way.  I was determined to do it all my way, not having a clue as to what I was getting myself into.  I’m here to tell you, publishing a book—any way you want to do it—isn’t for the faint of heart.  Somehow my stubbornness seemed to pay off and my less than perfect original edition seemed to practically go viral.  This was truly unexpected and a little overwhelming, honestly.

Since then I’ve had the time to explore new avenues, new angles and lots of new exciting research that I found myself DYING to add to the existing text, while also giving due consideration to comments from a few readers who challenged some basic assertions of mine or that needed more clarity from me or research evidence to make sense of certain things.  Many points were well taken and I was able to take those into active consideration during me re-write of the material.  I can certainly respect a viewpoint offered with thoughtful skepticism or curiosity.  I have always been willing to think flexibly enough to consider other points of view…in fact that is the very manner in which I arrived at the conclusions I now present.  (Otherwise I’d probably still be sitting somewhere eating tofu and granola–or worse,  and minding my own business…)

Being approached by a very real and respected publisher with the promise of doing it up right was like getting a second chance at life for me in a way.  It was so exciting to be able to revisit the original text and weave new texture into it, add to its depth, clarity, nuance and color and significantly add to its quality and substance, as well as express newly discovered material.  It was fun to explore some of the same topics in a whole new way, with new illustrations and ideas to consider.  I was able to employ the considerable talents of an old high school buddy—today an award winning, nationally syndicated political cartoonist having illustrated for Time, Newsweek and ABC’s Nightline—Jack Ohman, who created some wonderful new original drawings for the book (Jack is one of the funniest people I know).  He now says gluten freaks him out (so I guess my work is done).  :)

I also worked with very hard-nosed, nit-picky and meticulous science editors who helped me elevate everything to a whole new level.  The editing is superb.  The new cover and layout are to die for.  I am deeply grateful for the hard work and dedication of the amazing, energetic and passionate staff at Inner Traditions/Bear and Company (Healing Arts Press).  What an amazing, kind, talented group of people.  I can’t wait to have dinner with each and every one of them someday (should I ever make it to Vermont).

My esteemed and highly respected colleague, Dr. Mark Steinberg re-wrote portions of his original foreword to my book based on some new experiences he had applying more of my book to his own health and well being, while an additional foreword was generously contributed by none other than Brent Pottenger (founder of the Ancestral Health Society and descendant of famed nutritional pioneer, Dr. Francis Pottenger).  What a gift.

I’ve also been gifted some incredible endorsements from some incredible minds—from pioneering leaders in the field of health to respected physicians, a brilliant and deeply passionate former senior White House advisor to writers I myself deeply respect and have been influenced by.  I am humbled and a bit awestruck by some of their generous remarks.

–All I have to say is “Happy Birthday To Me!”

I am so grateful to all of you who may be reading this who have supported my work from the beginning and others that have become enthusiastic supporters along the way.  You all really keep me going and inspire me to be the best contributor I can be to this emerging field of evolutionary thought.  I am beyond humbled also by the extraordinary company I am keeping in this present day genre.  Have you SEEN the lineup at the Ancestral Health Symposium at UCLA?  Like, pinch me.  We’re tickling the edges of the mainstream now and it feels as though we are all on the edge of a major revolution. We’re all sailing on this incredible voyage of discovery to the New World of nutritional enlightenment—though once we arrive on the beach we’re far more likely to join the natives than plunder them.  We’ll grow in numbers to become an even a greater tribe.  It’s a groundswell we’re at the forefront of…and the world seems ready.

Hold on to your socks (or mukluks).

—Just a word to my well meaning friends whom I will be celebrating my birthday with this coming weekend:  keep your bottles of  “Geritol”, packages of “Depends” and black balloons to yourselves.

This Spring chick is a lean, mean, ketone-burning machine!

–Try it again in another 50 years!

This blog post represents an announcement I am quite excited about sharing with all of you.  Rather than side step this I’ll just come out with it:

Primal Body-Primal Mind has been picked up by a large enthusiastic publisher and is slated to be re-released in no small fashion sometime this summer!!

I was approached some time ago by Inner Traditions – Bear & Company with a wonderful offer to take my existing book and re-release it in a manner that will allow it to reach a far greater global audience.  The entire staff at Inner Traditions has been enormously positive, helpful, enthusiastic and supportive to me in the process of all this and I think you will all be more than pleased with the results.

So, you ask, is it the same book?  How will it be different?

Keep in mind that this is essentially the same book you have all come to know and love, but with some wonderful new and updated information, better referencing, vastly superior editing, a new foreword by Dr. Mark Steinberg plus an additional new wonderful foreword written by Brent Pottenger (descendant of Dr. Francis Pottenger and head of the newly established Ancestral Health Society), a new cover and new photo of me, together with some notable endorsements.  I’ve had an opportunity over the last number of months to review many of your comments about my book and make some positive changes to the material and make the manner in which it is presented significantly better.

To call this version “new and improved” is truly an understatement.

I have been nothing short of impressed with the publisher, the book’s progress and the developing plans for reaching a much wider audience.  Be prepared for big things.  This is going to be GREAT!

My book, under the new title of “Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet For Total Health and a Longer Life” is already available on Amazon.com for pre-order.  The existing version will be taken out of print as of March 1st, 2011. Hopefully the lag time won’t be more than 3 or 4 months.  The publisher has promised to have the new release on the book shelves no later than August 1st (I will be presenting at the Ancestral Health Symposium at UCLA August 7th).  Hopefully the new release will come much sooner.

For those of you that love the original version, you may want to consider giving that copy to a relative or friend and picking up the new and improved version for a renewed and updated perspective on the material.  There will certainly be something new there for those already familiar with Primal Body-Primal Mind and for the as yet uninitiated this new version will be a better-than-ever introduction to those seeking to improve their total health!

About Primal Body, Primal Mind

Combining your body’s Paleolithic needs with modern nutritional and medical research for complete mind-body wellness

• Provides sustainable diet strategies to curb sugar cravings, promote fat burning and weight loss, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep and moods, increase energy and immunity, and enhance memory and brain function

• Shows how our modern diet leads to weight gain and “diseases of civilization”–such as cancer, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and ADD

• Explains how diet affects the brain, hormone balance, and the aging process and the crucial role of vitamin D in cancer and disease prevention

Examining the healthy lives of our pre-agricultural Paleolithic ancestors and the marked decline in stature, bone density, and dental health and the increase in birth defects, malnutrition, and disease following the implementation of the agricultural lifestyle, Nora Gedgaudas shows how our modern grain- and carbohydrate-heavy low-fat diets are a far cry from the high-fat, moderate-protein hunter-gatherer diets we are genetically programmed for, leading not only to lifelong weight gain but also to cravings, mood disorders, cognitive problems, and “diseases of civilization”–such as cancer, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance), heart disease, and mental illness.

Applying modern discoveries to the basic hunter-gatherer diet, she culls from vast research in evolutionary physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, nutrition, and chronic and degenerative disease to unveil a holistic lifestyle for true mind-body health and longevity. Revealing the primal origins and physiological basis for a high-fat, moderate-protein, starch-free diet and the importance of adequate omega-3 intake–critical to our brain and nervous system but sorely lacking in most people’s diets–she explains the nutritional problems of grains, gluten, soy, dairy, and starchy vegetables; which natural fats promote health and which (such as canola oil) harm it; the crucial role of vitamin D in cancer and disease prevention; the importance of saturated fat and cholesterol; and how diet affects mental health, memory, cognitive function, hormonal balance, and cellular aging. With step-by-step guidelines, recipes, and meal recommendations, this book offers sustainable strategies for a primally based, yet modern approach to diet and exercise to reduce stress and anxiety, lose weight, improve sleep and mood, increase energy and immunity, enhance brain function, save money on groceries, and live longer and happier.

Greetings,

You all should know that the rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.  Such rumors come partly as a result of the hazard of having a very busy clinical practice.   Mea Culpa for my extended absence!

I wanted to alert you all to the news that I have been invited to be interviewed by Catherine Austin Fitts of the Solari Report (www.solari.com) this Thursday, October 21st at 6:20 PM PST.

A frequent sought-after guest on Coast To Coast radio Catherine has been an important advisor in two presidential administrations and understands better than just about anyone I know how the economy and our government really work behind the scenes.  Hers is truly an extraordinary background and impressive résumé.  Being a bit of a whistleblower these days she is a force for good in the world and regularly provides some of the most important economic and financial insight available anywhere, regularly interviewing some of the most knowledgeable experts in the world in their respective fields.

Being the insider she is, of course, Catherine understands the insidious impact of corporate manipulation of not only our economy and the media–but of our air, water and food supply as well as the current “health care” (read: disease management) system on the economy and on the lives of average Americans.  Always seeking foundational and unique sources of insight Catherine was inspired by the information in my book: Primal Body-Primal Mind and graciously invited me to be a guest on her extraordinary and important show.  That said, only subscribers to the Solari Report will have access to the full interview, though some portion of it will be made available to the general public on her site.  I feel fully honored by this amazing opportunity.  If you haven’t heard of Catherine Austin Fitts you’ll want to get to know her.  Here some information on the show tomorrow.

To Your Health -
