Sugar and Cancer

Scientists reveal the relationship between sugar and cancer (ScienceDaily)

A nine-year joint research project has led to a crucial breakthrough in cancer research. Scientists have clarified how the Warburg effect, a phenomenon in which cancer cells rapidly break down sugars, stimulates tumor growth. This discovery provides evidence for a positive correlation between sugar and cancer, which may have far-reaching impacts on tailor-made diets for cancer patients.

For the record, I wrote about the Warburg effect in my newest book, Primal Fat Burner in relation to the rapidly growing and extensive evidence for a positive correlation between sugar and cancer as a metabolic disease (and not a genetic one). This nine-year research project and new publication in Nature Communications seems to be confirming things nicely.

It’s worth pointing out that all utilizable carbohydrates are sugar once they hit your bloodstream and that this isn’t just about refined versions of sugars/carbs. Ketosis is increasingly taking center stage with respect to supplying a foundational metabolic prophylactic and support when it comes to cancer. Although macronutrient ratios clearly have a role to play in all this, however, I still stand firm that we need to add modern human longevity research to this equation for better optimization, while taking the uniquely challenging world that we live in today into account, and be entirely focused on nutrient-dense foods and fats/fat-soluble nutrients of absolutely uncompromising quality in direct alignment to our human evolutionary and genetic heritage. Not all ketogenic approaches are created equal, by any stretch of the imagination. I am now referring to my own unique approach to all of this (as just described) as Primalgenic®— a term I’m using to distinguish my own carefully considered and clinically/scientifically researched approach over 20-years from commercialized (and often questionable) versions of Paleo and ketogenic diets that are now flooding the marketplace.

The reigning expert on cancer as a metabolic disease, Dr. Thomas Seyfried, an award-winning research scientist, was one of the primary reviewer’s and supporters of my most recent book, Primal Fat Burner. In his comments, he stated that:

“Nora Gedgaudas presents compelling information on the health benefits of dietary fat from an evolutionary perspective. She does an excellent job in debunking the myth that high-fat low-carbohydrate diets are unhealthy, and that low-fat high-carbohydrate diets are healthy. She provides valuable resources for those interested in transitioning from unhealthy high-carbohydrate diets to healthy fat-based diets.“   Thomas N. Seyfried, Ph.D., Professor of Biology, Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences

It is clear that we all have this “new”, exceedingly compelling and increasingly validated model of cancer that can allow us to address this killer more effectively, in a whole new, more effective and far less toxic way. This research leads the way to this badly needed paradigm shift… whether or not Western medicine plans to pursue it. I fervently hope it will.

Nora, Thank you for this. My husband had bone and prostate cancer and cured it eating raw meat and raw eggs at age 77. What I would love to see you address sometimes is the fact that for some (many) a low carbs animal fats and protein diet makes is very hard to sleep. I see conversations about this problem online, but now one seems to address the cause and solution for this issue. Thank you for your amazing work.

I was a little distressed to read this article about how glucose starved cancer cells can become even more aggressive …I may have seen this in real life with clients who adopt a very strict diet of no glucose forming foods (high antioxidants and high nutrient dense foods), and their cancer not only doesn’t respond but has gotten worse (there were many other important life and diet changes as well). I strongly resonate with your approach and would love to hear any comments you have in regards to this?

This is why protein moderation is so critical in this whole equation and why the Atkins approach failed so abysmally in controlling cancer. It’s not simply about limiting sugar and starch, but also strictly moderating protein intake as a way of meeting but not exceeding one’s fundamental protein requirements. I have spoken about mTOR and the need for protein restriction in all of my books and a number of my articles. This is also why I recommend against glutamine supplementation in those that have been diagnosed with cancer. Mind you, not all cancers do this (as mentioned in the article), but I absolutely address the issue of excess protein being able to fuel cancer in lieu of glucose. One thing that is universally true is that glucose is THE most important source of fuel for all forms of cancer. Continuing to eat sugar is no one’s path to salvation here. By limiting the consumption of sugars and starches, strictly moderating ones protein intake and relying instead on fat as a primary source of fuel (which cancer is ill equipped to do) one’s odds of preventing cancer in the first place are dramatically enhanced. This dietary approach is foundationally sound, regardless. Once diagnosed with cancer, the rest of this approach becomes nuanced based on the individual characteristics of that cancer. I also spoke about the possibility of using the cancer tumor’s hunger for glucose against it with a Trojan horse strategy in my book, Primal Fat Burner that I hope someone will see fit to more properly research at some point. ~ Nora Gedgaudas

Nora, I know it’s an old post but I’m new to your Primal Restoration program and so after taking in all the info from the first week video (amazing, love it!) I am currently searching for more info on cancer. What is your take on Budwig diet ( we do homemade raw milk cottage cheese mixed with fresh flaxseed oil)? Does it have place in Keto diet for cancer?
    Would really appreciate your answer.

    Dear Anya,

I am NOT a fan of the Budwig approach. I neither recommend cottage cheese OR flax oil. Both have the potential to make cancer worse.

One wonderful book I can recommend is ‘Tripping Over The Truth’ by Travis Christofferson.

Also, if you are interested in booking a one-on-one appointment we could certainly do that. I do think I have information that could be of value to you. I don’t advertise my availability for this and only have the time/bandwidth to take on 3 or 4 clients per month. Here is the link for doing that, should you be inclined to do so: http://noragedgaudas.pages.ontraport.net/signup-for-appointment

I also suspect you will find a LOT of meaningful value in the program for this. It’s wonderful to have you here!

    Warmly,

    ~Nora
